Illness = Tightness?

Has anyone experienced that illness (upper respiratory infection - just a bad cold, really - congestion, slight sore throat, sneezing, coughing) causes band tightness? I am CRAZY tight right now and having a little nausea and abdominal pain every time I eat anything more solid than hummus. I haven't really had a really bad cold in the nearly 3 years since I've had my band so this is new to me.

I managed a few bites of very tender flank steak tonight, and some roasted acorn squash (delicious!) for dinner tonight and now have a stomach ache. I'm not stuck, it's a different feeling and it's sticking around long after dinner.

Maybe I'm taking too many pills (Dayquil/Nyquil plus vitamins) and they're hurting my stomach, but I didn't take any cold meds today until just a few minutes ago.

Maybe I just need a day or two of liquids/mushies to get my stomach back on track. Perhaps I'll pick up some protein powder and do smoothies and soup for a couple of days.

I used to experience those symptoms with the band whenever I was sick. My advice is to stick with the soft/mushies until you are feeling better. And, stay hydrated! I have found--even now with the sleeve--that eating "normally" is easier when I'm properly hydrated.

Hope you feel better soon!

I always get super tight when sick. It's a combo of the inflammatory process and the constant drainage/mucus. Warm soup and plenty of water helps.

Yes - I agree with AJ. The mucus makes a "plug" of sorts, and I've had to get an unfill before.

My sister has recurrent sinus/respiratory issues and had to get unfills if they last more than a few days. Four yrs out she switched to the sleeve (unrelated issue, though ;)
Hope you're better soon!

Yup. When I got bronchitis a few months back I was so tight that I got stuck on EVERYTHING I ate. I had to go for an emergency unfil. It took a while for the swelling to go down too and my clinic said that heavy antibiotics cause swelling and make the band super tight too.

I drink coconut water to stay hydrated and on a positive you'll probably drop a bit of weight as well.

Feel better soon.

I haven't been sick since I got my band, since it is only 11 weeks old. That will be something to watch out for!

I hope you feel better soon.
