True or False

I went to the support group for my bariatric surgeon's office last night. We played a weight loss surgery trivia game. It was pretty fun. We answered questions such as:

  • What is the range of a normal BMI?
  • Which has more protein per ounce: meat, dairy, or soy?
  • Which surgery has a side effect of "dumping"?
  • What are co-morbidities?
  • Which surgery has an average weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week?
Then we got to a question that stopped me in my tracks:

  • True or false: it is possible to lose weight with a lap band without ever getting a fill?
I rang my bell and answered: true. I figured it was a trick question. I mean, we all lose weight at the beginning, right? But over time, we all need fills. Right?

Well, my answer was right (and I won the point), but my explanation was apparently incorrect. According to nurse G, some people lose all of their weight without ever getting a fill. There was a gentleman there who was near goal, lost 60-something pounds and had never had a fill.

Really?

I have never heard of such a thing. Has anyone else? From reading everyone's blogs, I thought the whole point of adjustable gastric banding was the adjustable part. I'd love to hear some thoughts on that because I'm stumped.

I'm a little nervous to say this out loud, so I'll whisper it like Sarah did:

I was under 250 again this morning. 249.8, but I'll take it. I have been working hard, and I'm hoping this time the 250's are gone for good.

I know some people feel restriction without anything added. I have mostly only heard that with men. However, there are a few new studies out there that say that it isn't the restriction that helps us lose weight, but the nerve the band pushes against. That nerve is supposed to affect hunger. Not sure if I agree, but I would guess that it could be a little of both and could see how some people would be affected more. Also since I just got restriction at month 6 I could see how someone with less weight to lose could possibly go without it, but I can't imagine going any longer without restriction!!!

First I've heard of it. I would bet it's rare. And I'm whispering back congrats for leaving the 250s behind.

I have heard of it. I myself like my band loose and despite the few pounds I have gained back from stress eating (ice cream which restriction would not help with) it was all lost while loose (I lost 70 with only 2cc). If I feel like I am too tight, I go back for an unfill or get no fill. I am currently sitting at 5cc in a 10cc band and have days that I feel I am too tight still.

Congrats on 249! I can't whisper in the comments. I've read on boards people saying they have restriction from just the band, but I think it's rare.

I have heard of that, not in my case though.

There was somone in our support group who's lost almost 150 without ever having a fill! Amazing... And congrats on the continued loss! Sometimes whispering is good... :-)

Yes, I've heard of the no fill needed too. But the thing is, MOST if not ALL of doctors do put in a cc or two or three for 'priming' during surgery so most people do have fluid in their band even if they don't get a fill. KWIM? I know that the first week after surgery I was SOO tight I couldn't get water down easily so they took out my 3 ccs of priming fluid. But after the surgery swelling went down, I needed a fill!

Fascinating! You learn something new every day. I was under the impression that fills were absolutely necessary 100% of the time.
