My Mom

I've started about 6 blog posts this week and have deleted every single one. I wasn't sure how to say this, but here goes...

My mom has bladder cancer.

It's early and extremely treatable - thank god - and as far as cancer goes, this is a good one to have. But still...that word...it's goddamn scary.

I didn't want to say it in an, "Oh! The sky is falling! My whole world is shattered!" kind of way. And I didn't want to say, "Eh, no big deal. The news hasn't affected me at all." It's somewhere in between. And usually I'm pretty ok with words, but I don't have the right ones for this situation.

My mom and I have an amazing relationship. It wasn't always that way. We didn't exactly get along when I was younger. We didn't like each other very much for about a decade. But now...we're friends. Not just mother and daughter. We like to hang out together and that's awesome.

So...I don't know what else to say so I'll end it here.

steph i'm sorry to hear about this but thank god its treatable at this stage. i can relate so much with your relationship. all throughout my teens it felt like my mom hated me and i was scared of her. it wasn't till i got to my 20s when she finally relaxed and stopped being such a disciplinarian and became more of a friend. sending you hugs and good vibes and i hope your mom gets a clean bill of health.

You're right- cancer is a really scary word. I'm glad that they caught it early and it is treatable. That's the best you can get along with a diagnosis! You'll have your down days for sure, but keeping an overall positive attitude really does make a difference to you and to the person going through the treatments.

We're here for you when you need us.

Stephanie, I'm sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis. My mom was diagnosed with early-stage bladder cancer about 18 years ago and had a fully recovery (even with a recurrence a year later). She's perfectly healthy now at 62 years old. Best wishes to your mom for a quick treatment and recovery!

Glad to hear it is treatable-- I hear you on cancer in the family: my dad had prostate and lung and my sister had breast: both are ALIVE and doing well to this day.
Hang in there, I know that scared feelings, but knowing there is treatment and good odds-- keep your eye on the positive !!
